Delhi Galiyara

Delhi Galiyara is an ongoing photographic archive of Delhi built through walking. Founded in 2017, the project emerges from a practice of moving through the city as a flâneuse, observing, collecting and returning. Rather than documenting Delhi comprehensively, it gathers fragments of everyday life, overlooked spaces, seasonal changes and encounters that might otherwise disappear. Photography becomes both a record and a way of paying attention. Alongside the archive, walking has evolved into a methodology that informs my work as an educator, facilitator and storyteller. Through Delhi Galiyara, I continue to explore the relationship between movement, memory and the city as a living archive.

I curated and lead the Smell Sensorium Walk in collaboration with Sensing the City, supported by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. It was done in Chandni Chowk. The idea of the walk was to play around with the idea of what happens when olfactory takes over the visual senses and we let our nose lead the way. The result of which was a discovery of an old dhaba known only to the locals of Chandni Chowk, frequented by the traders around for their daily meal, ultimately culminating on Khari Baoli’s Seth Gadodia Market. The walk took place on Nov’24, 2018.

A bustling lane of Old Delhi’s legendary Patri Kitab Bazaar, captured at its original street-side home on Netaji Subhash Marg, before it was relocated to Mahila Haat in 2019.
